War-affected Women Development Society leader threatened in Mannaar

TamilNet reports 47-year-old Thavapalan Piriayatharsini, the head of Women Development Society in Mannar and her three daughters have been threatened by an unknown gang.
The society operates at Theaththaa-vaadi, a village in Maanthai West division of Mannnaar district.
A group of unknown men, who came in a white van entered her house on August 11th and warned ‘rape and death’ if she continued to give social leadership to the villagers.
‘The threatening presence of a white van squad is still continuing’ she said.
Piriayatharsini is a survivor of the mass bombing in 2009, her two sons were recruited by the LTTE and died in the war and her daughter was injured in the shelling and is now disabled.
The squad are particularly angry about her making demands for the village from political parties, including asking for a well to be made.
Before she received threats she said: ‘At the occasion of every election, politicians come to us. They receive our votes giving false promises to us.’
